Lawrence J. White
Lawrence J. White is the Robert Kavesh Professor of Economics at New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business.
His research focuses on antitrust, industrial organization, financial regulation, network industries, international banking, and applied microeconomics, reflecting a law & economics approach to competition and regulatory policy.
White has spent his academic career at New York University. During that time, he also served in public policy roles, including as director of the Economic Policy Office in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and as a board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, in which capacity he also served on the board of Freddie Mac. He additionally served on the senior staff of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.
He is the author of "The S&L Debacle: Public Policy Lessons for Bank and Thrift Regulation" and a co-author of "Guaranteed to Fail: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Debacle of Mortgage Finance." He is also co-editor of "The Antitrust Revolution" and a contributor to "Restoring Financial Stability" and "Regulating Wall Street."
His honors include the Industrial Organization Society Distinguished Service Award, the NYU Stern Faculty Leadership Award, the NYU Stern Faculty Service Award, a Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant, and recognition for outstanding scholarship in financial institutions.
He earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, a master’s in economics from the London School of Economics, and a bachelor’s from Harvard University.
