Jonathan Baker
Jonathan B. Baker is professor of law emeritus at American University Washington College of Law, and a fellow and senior academic advisor to the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale.
His research focuses on antitrust, economic regulation, and the intersection of competition policy and law & economics.
Baker previously served as chief economist of the Federal Communications Commission. Earlier, he was director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission. He also worked as a senior economist at the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and as special assistant to the deputy assistant attorney general for economics in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division.
In academia, he held multiple faculty positions at American University Washington College of Law, and served as a visiting professor at Yale Law School and New York University School of Law. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor at Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center.
He also served as an attorney advisor to the acting chairman of the Federal Trade Commission and worked as an antitrust lawyer in private practice.
Baker is the author of "The Antitrust Paradigm: Restoring a Competitive Economy" and co-author of the casebook "Antitrust Law in Perspective: Cases, Concepts and Problems in Competition Policy." He previously served as editorial chair of the Antitrust Law Journal and as a member of the council of the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law.
His honors include the American Antitrust Institute’s Jerry S. Cohen Award for Antitrust Scholarship, American University’s faculty award for outstanding scholarship, research, and other professional accomplishments, and the Federal Trade Commission’s award for distinguished service.
He earned a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a master’s in economics from Stanford University, and a bachelor’s from Harvard University.
