Do Any (Other) Law Schools Have A Dominant Paradigm?

An exchange between Ethan Leib at Prawfsblawg and Kate Litvak in the comments to Ethan’s very interesting post on political science in the academy raises some interesting questions about the status of law and economics in the legal academy. Ethan kicks off the exchange by noting that: “[Y]ou’d have to be blind to ignore that ... Do Any (Other) Law Schools Have A Dominant Paradigm?

NYSE proposal would give majority voting more teeth.

An NYSE working group recently issued a report recommending, among other things, that NYSE Rule 452 be amended to no longer allow brokers to vote uninstructed shares in uncontested elections. Briefly, for any shareholder vote brokers are required to seek voting instructions from the beneficial owners of shares held in “street name.” Under current Rule ... Full Text Searching Added to EDGAR

I just noticed that the SEC’s EDGAR data base now has a beta version full text search feature (see here). I’m not sure how well it works (the search of my name came up empty, but I know I’m on the cover pages of some S-1s and S-4s from my practice days), but it’s a ... Full Text Searching Added to EDGAR

Buy or Die, Update

Via Marginal Revolution, I came across this letter from the National Kidney Foundation to the AEI in anticipation of AEI’s upcoming event (June 12th) addressing the national organ shortage (previous post here). Here’s an excerpt: The officers and staff of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) were surprised to learn that AEI has scheduled a forum ... Buy or Die, Update

Buy or Die

AEI is hosting an event focusing on the problems of the nation’s shortage of vital organs. The website has links to the papers. The event agenda includes my friend and colleague Lloyd Cohen, who has done a good deal of work in this area (including this). Here’s the event description: The nation’s system for procuring ... Chase Hires New Dean

After a lightning fast dean search, I’m pleased to announce that we’ve hired Dennis Honabach, currently the Dean at Washburn University School of Law, as our new Dean. Dennis is a corporate law type so I’ll no longer be the senior corporate law prof on the faculty. This is a good thing because I’m not ... Chase Hires New Dean

Philip Morris v. Williams

Yet another *ANOTHER* products liability and disclosure case is in the news!  The Supreme Court has granted certiorari in Philip Morris v. Williams. This case was brought against Philip Morris by the widow of a smoker, who maintained that Philip Morris’s fraudulent and negligent conduct regarding disclosure about cigarettes, lung cancer, safety risks, and related ... Do Economists Make Better Lawyers?

Yes. So says R. Kim Craft and Joe G. Baker in a recent paper in the Journal of Economic Education entitled “Do Economists Make Better Lawyers? Undergraduate Degree Field and Lawyer Earnings.” Here is the abstract: Using nationally representative data, the authors examine the effects of preprofessional education on the earnings of lawyers. They specify ... Do Economists Make Better Lawyers?

Home Depot Directors – It’s not you, it’s *me.*

Bill Sjostrom broke the news of the disgraceful absence of directors at the recent Home Depot shareholders’ meeting here. I found the story so scandalous, however, that I did a bit more digging, just to see what sort of rationale for missing the meeting was proffered by the truant HD directors. All I found was ...
