I also expect Democratic administrations especially to take their regulatory responsibilities seriously and not let traditional economic analysis or a slew of historical enforcement blunders stand in the way of a more activist antitrust policy. No, what would really shock me is a wider recognition within the “antitrust establishment” that Varney’s remarks are all part and parcel of an inevitable antitrust politics; that even the Chicago School analysis(basic microeconomics) cannot capture all that is wrong with traditional enforcement; and that the only way to make real and permanent progress is to push for the explicit repeal of specific antitrust statutes.
